New Post has been published on sparkly and cozy Brooklyn wedding by Martina Micko Photo

Time for another gorgeous wedding to share with all you lovely brides and wedding lovers this Monday! I’m all about gorgeous, and this couple really did it perfectly — with glam gold touches and a laid back ceremony, their DIY day featured fun pinatas, tons of twinkly lights, and an adorable couple — Rachel and Evan — who make the sweetest match! Read on to see more of their beautiful day photographed by Martina Micko, and to hear what the bride and groom have to say about their special day!

From the Bride & Groom:

What words would you use to describe your wedding? I’d call it sparkly and cozy
Wedding colors? We didn’t really pick colors, but Evan is a huge fan of black so pretty much everything was black and white, with a little bit of gold. Other than that, really the only planned color was the red in Rachel’s bouquet

Tell us a bit about your love story! We met in a running group in 2010 and had some of our first “dates” during 20 mile training runs. Since then, we’ve bonded over music, bad puns, our two dumb cats, and falling in love with each others friends and families. We only decided to make it official in November after Rachel accepted a job in Los Angeles. We knew we wanted to get married in Brooklyn before we go, but Rachel’s brother (a naval officer) is going overseas in February so we had to move fast. Neither of us had ever really thought about what kind of wedding we wanted, so it was a three month sprint starting from scratch.

Overall theme, look & feel and any special touches about wedding?
Any overall theme or look was purely accidental! We had really limited time for planning so we cut out a lot of potential “projects.” The two major ones were the coaster placeholders that Evan made and the cocoa jars Rachel made. For the coasters, Evan burned R+E and the wedding date into 3-inch hickory coasters, and for close friends he woodburned custom designs onto the reverse side. Guests got inside jokes, logos of favorite bars, Banksy recreations, and other reflections of their personalities. We didn’t have bridesmaids or groomsmen, so this was a way to still do something special for our friends.

Did anyone special, friend/family help you out and how?
Absolutely. We could not have planned our wedding in under three months without a ton of help. We knew we were going to ask our super talented friends Alexis and Santiago to make their gorgeous golden piñatas, which were really the only special decor we had. Likewise, we were lucky that our friend Eric picked up classical guitar after two years in Paraguay, and was willing to do special arrangements of the White Stripes for the ceremony, Evan’s favorite band and a special callout to his home city of Detroit. The last special touch was from our chef friend Glen, who made the beautiful chocolate raspberry cake exactly how we imagined it. Otherwise, we had really great advice and ideas from Rachel’s cousin Melissa, a wedding planner/designer. She had great ideas for the flowers (black and white anemones), activities for the kids, and reminding us that we actually needed a marriage license! We were asking her questions about the glass to break during the ceremony up until the last minute.

Why did you choose the location that you did?
Deity was perfect for us because they took care of so much in house. Owners Caio and Kristine Dunson handled everything including the DJ, the flowers and decor, the catering, and night-of coordination. They took time to get to know us, and made lots of accommodations for our guests. But all of that support wouldn’t have mattered if we didn’t like the venue. Split over three levels, Deity feels small enough that with just under a hundred guests, it felt full and intimate at the same time. And it already had a sort of dark, glamorous look that was perfect for a cold snowy night.

Importantly, it’s also in a great neighborhood for an urban Brooklyn wedding. The surrounding Boerum Hill/Carrol Gardens hoods had the modern Nu Hotel where we stayed, Ceol Irish pub (where we went for the after party), and bars/restaurants for the night before all within walking distance, not to mention that it’s just an awesome area to walk around. We thought the after party at Ceol would be fun, but it ended up being a highlight because we could catch up with a lot of our out of town friends once the craziness of the reception was over. And Ceol arranged platters of fried food that made it possible to keep the party going. Overall, the neighborhood was ideal for showing off our city to out of town guests.

When you look back, what was your most memorable moment(s)?
The flowers, dress, and food all pale in comparison to having so many friends come from out of town, on pretty short notice. Evan had a big group from Detroit, and (almost) all of Rachel’s friends from past homes in Minnesota and San Francisco made the trek. Having everyone meet for the first time was really fun (and one romance started to unfold throughout the night). A major highlight was the dance party in the basement of Deity, which included at least one battle on the dance floor. Because Deity used to be a nightclub, the dance floor/bar on the lower level made it feel like a fun night out in the city, not a traditional wedding reception.
So what do you think, lovelies? A picture perfect day in Brooklyn with the perfect couple, right? Let us know what you think of Rachel and Evan’s wedding. I have to say my favorite part is their lovely pinatas and the bride’s lovely dress! Thanks again to Martina Micko for sharing these beautiful photos with us, and congrats to the happy couple!

New Post has been published on advice: 4 important tips for invitation planning and etiquette
Mademoiselle Fiona
I need to put a disclaimer on this post before I lead anyone astray. I am, by no means, the Martha Stewart of wedding invitations. As I reviewed her tips, I was a little overwhelmed with all the must dos.
Some of my wonderings about the great lengths of invitation etiquette included:
A) Is it necessary to distinguish between a Miss and a Ms. for an adult? Will we cause some sort of Bridget Jones style ice cream eating breakdown when a friend gets our invitation and resigns herself to a life of cat lady Ms.-ness?
B) How do I know which of my far away relatives should have the title of Dr.? Does Love Doctor count?
I get it. Niceities shouldn’t be totally abandoned. This may be more practical invitation guidance though.
As a double-ceremony bride (Hindu for my fiancé and his family, Christian for me and my crew), the invitation process of 2 invites, like Extra Sugar Free Gum, doubled the fun. Our Indian invites kept the beauty and tradition of the Hindu wedding whereas we chose our American invites to reflect our panache.

Here are a few tidbits I learned along the way.

1) Honor thy parents (or whoever’s input weighs heavily in your life). For example, the wording for Indian invitations is crucial. We made sure to review previous Indian wedding invites and asked family from my fiancé’s side about our accuracy. For my parents, I also asked for a visual once over.
2) But share your style. There are endless creative invitations out there by awesome and affordable design sites like Peartree, Love vs. Design and our winner, Minted. Minted stole our hearts with their mini-book format, perfect for our multiple day event. I adore that the invitation style was available for our website background too. Double score!!

3) Who is hosting and who is coasting? The wording on American invitations changes based on who is covering a majority of cost. If someone else is heavily supporting your dream day, give appropriate credit.
And finally…
4) Proofreading is a beast. Make sure to give yourself ample time for edits. Ours became an epic battle of wits between us and the details. We ended up sending the proof back over 4 times. This delays your invitation send time. We still made the standard 3-4 months-before-the-wedding timeline, but you don’t need more anxiety. Planning your wedding causes enough of that already!
What do your dream invitations look like? Are there any etiquette tips that must be followed like the 10 commandments?

New Post has been published on your dream international destination wedding with Giovanni Lorenzi Fotografo
It’s our pleasure to introduce all you lovely brides to one of our favorite international photographers today! Giovanni Lorenzi of Giovanni Lorenzi Fotografo is a photographic artist who specializes in evocative images of the living world. If you’re having a destination wedding in Italy or any of the surrounding countries anytime soon, you should absolutely consider this talented photographer for your wedding day.

Although he focused primarily on documenting everyday life at the beginning of his career, in the early nineties he began photographing weddings, couples, and children, and within a short time he had swapped his established city career for the precarious life of an international traveling photographer. His photographs of people reveal a compassionate understanding of his subjects, as you can clearly tell by his lovely photos. It’s clear he loves capturing the emotion and joy behind weddings!

Giovanni specializes in creating a combination of fine art and storytelling pieces through his camera that will truly showcase the emotion of your wedding for many days to come. While he’s an established photographer, he frequently reinvents his creative approach to his work and in his opinion photography is a journey that results in romance, beauty and self confidence. He believes each image should be gracefully crafted to capture the true beauty of the moment.

If a destination wedding or vacation to Italy is in your future, Giovanni could be just the right photographer to help you capture the amazing journey. See more of his gorgeous work on his website, or follow him on Facebook.

New Post has been published on tips for throwing the best wedding DIY party ever!
Brian Leahy Photography
I admit it. Pinterest has lit my crafty-cooking-fashionista fire. But there’s one issue. I’m not the crafty type, so the idea of doing DIY wedding stuff definitely requires calling in the troops.
Picture this as case in point:
Not so long ago, I decided to fix the strap of one of my casual dresses. This endeavor — nay, epic journey — included:
1) Wandering through the craft aisles for an hour like I had a paper bag over my head
2) Buying iron-on Velcro to fix my strap
3) Burning through the strap and staining the iron with red dress goo.
Results! Dress falls off with any slight movement. True story.
You can see my hesitation, right?
It’s totally not my intention to go raggedy DIY for our special day so I had to organize a compelling party atmosphere to lure the true crafters to my house to create my David Tutera dreams.
And thus ensued… the best crafting party ever with my maids of honor, bridesmaids and one groomsman thrown in for good measure! You can do this too with the right elements.
1. Get your projects prepared. This takes some time if the craft store seems like a parallel universe to you. I made 4-5 trips to Joann’s and Michaels. I also suggest phoning a friend for crafting advice. I called my mom, sister and sister in law: all much more versed in the world of tulle and buttons than I. Best advice: Balance time and energy expended with cost. Is it worth wrapping tiny muslin tea bags for hours when you can buy pre done ones for less money and work?
2. Provide a new experience (and possibly adult beverages). I managed to snag an in-home wine tasting voucher at a previous bridal expo and laid out the VIP treatment. *Be mindful not to have too many adult beverages. Crafting tools may look innocent but they tend to be sharp or pointy.
3. Have plenty of food! We rolled out the honey goat cheese, fancy raspberry peach jam and gourmet crackers. My friends were awesome enough to bring extra goodies and even make chocolate covered strawberries. We ran out of chocolate quite early though ( extra chocolate, it calms down your volunteers).

4. Have your craft plan ready and let people choose. We had three tasks at hand: a heart garland made from old music books, table numbers shaped like state silhouettes, and homemade tea bag favors. My party peeps showed their skills and picked tasks they were comfortable with.
5. Finally, take lots of pictures of your hard work. Haha screw you pinterest. We had no fails!

Well no craft fails…I did learn that I am not allowed near a hot glue gun. Ever. Again. Told you I’m not crafty!! Thanks and hugs and love to my wedding party for the help. You’re not free yet though (mwahahahaha).
